Over the years, here at fridec SOLUTIONS, we have realised that commercial refrigeration generates lots of queries. That’s why we wanted to create a guide with frequently asked questions that we have come across in our years of work.
Commercial refrigeration refers to the process of designing, installing and maintaining specific refrigeration units in commercial spaces.
The main elements of refrigeration in a commercial premises are the refrigerated unit (display) and the cold store (storage). The refrigerated unit can be open, with a curtain or closed with doors or lids. This type of unit is usually a refrigerated cabinet. The temperatures of the refrigerated elements can be positive, above 0º, or negative, below 0º freezing.
It is important to note that, in Spain, we increasingly see CO2 refrigeration systems as an environmentally friendly alternative.
What is commercial refrigeration?

What type of systems are usually proposed?
The basic premise we have to understand to design a commercial refrigerated system is that the required refrigerating power can be achieved in different ways. But the different ways generate heat that we have to dissipate and noise that we have to prevent.
Normally, commercial premises for these systems are inside cities so we have to study the chosen premises properly to see if that system is possible..
The different types are as follows:
- Machines inside the premises. This requires a soundproof room or area and chimney or façade to expel the heat.
- Machines with condenser outside (rooftop) and engines in the machinery room or inside. The heat dissipates via the condenser outside.
- Machines outside, noise and heat outside.
What are these machines like?
- Compact: evaporator, engine and condenser go together.
- Engine and condenser on one side and evaporator on the other.
How does a commercial refrigeration system work?
The purpose of a commercial refrigeration system is to turn heat into cold thanks to thermal energy.
These systems use thermodynamic properties and principles of fluid mechanics in order to transport the thermal energy when the refrigerant absorbs the heat in the evaporator. Next, the compressor compresses the refrigerant towards the condenser, where it dissipates this heat. Finally, the refrigerant returns to the evaporator through the expansion valve, closing the cycle.
How do commercial refrigeration systems work?
The working consists of a circuit where the refrigerant fluid moves via the ducts to reach the evaporator. From there, the heat dissipates thanks to the circulating effect and the fan removes the heat through the movement of the blades.
As a general rule, they are installed in commercial premises where products require suitable refrigeration in order to be preserved, such as: fishmongers, greengrocers, supermarkets, hospitality....
Commercial refrigeration systems are systems that adapt to the space available.
Commercial refrigeration systems can, and must, be designed with energy efficiency and the comfort of the people that use the space (workers and customers) in mind.
