Refrigeration systems are designed to provide cooling and air conditioning services in a safe manner. For this reason, it is essential that they comply with the safety regulations for refrigeration systems and their installation published in the BOE (Royal Decree 552/2019). This decree sets out the conditions that refrigeration systems need to comply with and, in doing so, guarantee the safety of people, of goods and of the environment.
It is important to keep in mind that refrigeration systems need to be perfectly maintained and comply with stipulated checks and inspections.
Is the maintenance of refrigeration systems compulsory?
It is compulsory for any refrigeration system to pass both checks and inspections. The only thing that varies is the timescale, which depends on the
type of refrigerant used.
Who carries out the inspection and maintenance of refrigeration systems?
The checks should be carried out by a company that is qualified to do them. In contrast, inspections can only be carried out by an
Authorised Inspection Body..
How regularly should refrigeration systems be checked?
As we mentioned previously, frequency varies and depends on the refrigerant.
Compulsory periodic checks
- Systems should be checked at least every 5 years.
- If a refrigerant charge of over 3000 kg is used, it should be checked every 2 years.
These periodic checks can be carried out using specialist companies within the sector who will take charge of checking the external condition of the components and materials as well as the condition of the interior when the systems are empty and dismantled. During the compulsory periodic checks, all the safety elements should also be dismantled to check that they are functioning correctly.
PLastly, the condition of the insulation should also be checked, as well as the pipes and identification plates.
When the checks are completed, an information sheet will be provided which should detail:
- The checks carried out during the inspection.
- All the tests that have been done.
- The repairs or replacements that have been made.
- A declaration that the system complies with all safety requirements.
Compulsory periodic inspections:
The inspections will consist of the following actions:
- Checking that the compulsory checks have been carried out.
- Waste management inspection.
- Checking that hygiene controls are carried out for the prevention of legionellosis.
- Checking the most important safety elements.
- Documentation inspection.
- Documentation of the refrigeration system.
